For several years, the German Short Course Swimming Championships for amputee swimmers and swimmers with other disabilities were organized in the city of Chemnitz. More recently the annual event was moved to other German cities like Wuppertal or Remscheid. Remember a previous competition and view some additional photographs taken in the year 2003. Some of the athletes shown in the photographs, like Swen Michaelis or Christiane Reppe, are still competing, others have ended their career or moved on to work as team officials or trainers. The Cup, originally initiated in 1989 by the ambitious young Hamburg team with the help of Siemens AG, has developed over the years into one of the highlights on the international disabled volleyball scene. This year's competition, which was organized for the 22nd time, was again won by the team of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, the team of KSI Kotka from Finland came in second. From December 12 to 19, 2010, more than 2500 disabled athletes from 41 countries and regions were in Guangzhou, China, for the 2010 Asian Paragames.
The competition was the largest sports event for amputees, wheelchair athletes and athletes with other disabilities since the Asian Paralympic committee came into being in 2006. During the Asian Para Games, which concluded on December 19 with an impressive closing ceremony in the capital of Guangdong province, athletes with a disability took part in 19 sports, amongst them sitting volleyball, swimming, athletics, wheelchair basketball, goalball, wheelchair fencing, table tennis. According to the organizers there are plans to extent the scale of the competition by including more sports with international standing to ensure more disabled people have access to sports. This will be the first time since 2007, when amputee soccer teams from all over the world met for the Amputee Football World Championships in Antalya, Turkey.

From August 15 to 21 the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships are being organized in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. About 650 amputee swimmers and swimmers with other disabilities from 53 countries are taking part in the event, which takes place in the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium in the Southern part of the city. According to the organizers the number of participating athletes and countries is one of the largest of any previous Swimming World Championships. Find out more and view some photographs. Amputee Soccer Players getting ready

Eight amputee soccer teams from Russia, the Ukraine, Iran, Nigeria, Turkey and Liberia will start playing against each other today in the 2010 World Cup of the Champions. The amputee football tournament opens today at the Loginov Station in Volzhskiy, near Volgograd. To find out about the latest news from the tournament - visit the organizer's homepage (in Russian). The competition will be the last big tournament before the Amputee Soccer World Cup to be organized in October in Argentina.

Sitting Volleyball

On June 19 and 20, 2010 sitting volleyball players from all over Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands met in the Northern German city of Hamburg for the annually held Werner von Siemens Cup Sitting Volleyball Tournament. The Cup, originally initiated in 1989 by the ambitious young Hamburg team with the help of Siemens AG, has developed over the years into one of the highlights on the international disabled volleyball scene. This year's competition was won by the team of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, the team of BV Leipzig came in second. Find out more and view some photographs - click here.

For the last years the BT Paralympic World Cup has been organized in the city of Manchester. Jonas Martens - Belgian amputee swimmer

Belgian amputee swimmer Jonas Martens lost his right leg at the age of six. After chemotherapy and rehabilitation his physiotherapist encouraged him to get involved in sports. At first he tried out skiing, but later switched to swimming which he can practice all year long. He took part in the Paralympic Games in Sydney in 2000 and also participated in the Athens Paralympics 2004.
